All Criminals Are Created Equal, right?

I’m confused because I know if I walk down any street and ask 100 people if a twice-convicted person deserved a second chance to do the job they lost, I’m sure more than half would say no.

Yet here we are ramping up for the 2024 presidential election and this is exactly what a lot of people want to happen by reelecting the former president who may have been culpable in the attack on American democracy 0n Jan. 6, 2021. Remember that day when Blue Lives didn’t matter to a bunch of people who attacked Capitol Police officers for doing their jobs?

Remember when that guy who was on his way out of the White House waited hours to call the National Guard, while the world watched America being torn apart over an election lie? Judging from the supportive signs for that guy around Marlboro County, I guess it doesn’t matter. And that makes me wonder, are y’all this forgiving of the person who gets arrested multiple times for stealing food when they’re hungry? Or should they know better, pull themselves up by their boot straps and go get a job at Mohawk…oh, that’s not an option anymore. For a huge segment of the community, reelecting a former president who has several indictments, has been accused of sexual assault and has been ordered to pay millions of dollars to a woman who a JURY said he sexually abused is offensive.

I’m just wondering, why do so many people want to give a “criminal” a second chance, but won’t offer the same to a neighbor who broke the law as well? Why is that guy special?

While we want to believe that any American can be President of the United States, one thing this guy should’ve taught us is that any American should not be.

The former president is the only federal official to be impeached twice. In most places around the country, this type of behavior from a regular person would be frowned upon, would cause that person to be blackballed from polite society. Maybe because Marlboro County is the home of conditional second chances, that’s why the former president has so much support here.

And let me define conditional second chances: If forgiving you benefits me, then all transgressions are forgiven. Basically the good old boys club but no room for accountability.

I guess giving the former president another chance at the Oval Office is an extension of why there are so many confederate memorials in the south. I mean, that guy was impeached for incitement of insurrection, same thing the confederate leaders did to start the Civil War; hence why it is a high crime.

Would we be so forgiving of a registered sex offender looking to be the director of a daycare center? Or would we be rightfully outraged that this person would have the unmitigated gall to even suggest such an abhorrent idea? I’d like to think that sensible people would be outraged. Yet, so many signs around the area draws sensibility into question.

If a local politician did any of the things that the former president has done, U-Haul trucks would be lined up in front of that person’s home to run them out of town — that is if that person even still lives in the area. There was a time when this county had standards and held people who didn’t have the best interest of Marlboro County accountable. I know that was a long time ago and it doesn’t look as if we’re going to be moving back in that direction because so many people want to see a whole criminal become the President of the United States. Do you want democracy or are we trying to give Russia the Cold War victory they always wanted?

In 2021, 55% of Americans supported the Senate disqualifying Trump from holding federal office in the future, according to Reuters. But somehow, the cult of personality has so many people believing this— twice impeached, should be registered on the sex offenders registry list in all 50 states- guy should have another chance to ruin—er— run this country. Make that make sense. And while we’re at it, if we’re extending grace to criminals these days, let’s do the same for offenders who committed crimes because they had no other choice or substance abuse problems. Because for whatever reason, too many people seem to think abusing power and practically destroying a nation is a forgivable offense and want to see it happen again. Go figure.
